Demetrio Sánchez is a first-generation coffee grower from the rural town of Alto Cañada in La Plata, western Huila. He has been producing coffee for the last 14 years. At 2100m altitude, his farm has the perfect climatic conditions for cultivating high-quality coffee, as evidenced by his consecutive placements in the western region's top five in the 2023 and 2024 Copa de Oro competitions.

Demetrio practices polyculture, intercropping coffee with root vegetables, maize, avocados, beans, tree tomatoes, and plantains. This permaculture approach not only enhances the topsoil but also enriches the deeper soil with a variety of nutrients, minerals, and microorganisms. The farm’s high altitude and crop diversity naturally reduce pests. Additionally, polyculture provides the family with a diverse source of food and income.
